very reliable
I've had this printer for over 6 months for business use. It's been very reliable and copes with printing up to 80 sheets a day on a regular basis.It does seem to get through ink rather quickly hence 4 stars rather than 5.
Other than that I'm happy with the quality, ease of use and reliability and think it's a good product for the price.

Totally unreliable
This printer is rubbish! Every other time I want to print and turn it on, it starts reinstalling the software, and regularly takes itself offline and refuses to print! Im a student and so bought this model as it was relatively cheap, but now I know why. My flatmate had the same one and hers did exactly the same. I don't think it is HP though, just the model, as my family printer at home has never given us trouble and it is an HP too.31

HP vs a nightmare .which one do you prefer
This is not a printer but a nightmare. Simply it would not print. I have to literately switch of my laptop in order to start printing. It would not print just by switching on and of the printer itself , rather I have to switch of my laptop. All my mates have the same problem as me... so this is not one sporadic faulty printer, all the hp F380 are the same.My advice ...if you don t want your life shortened don t buy it !

Steady performer
I bought this printer to proof garden designs before final printing at A2/A1. I have found it an excellent performer for the job. I rarely print large photos as the designs have small concept images on the page rather than large, borderless copies, etc. Compared to my Epson CX6600 A4 printer, the colours are perhaps a little washed out but I would think this is the paper rather than the printer and I only print at the normal setting not `best'. I chose the printer as new ink cartridges have the nozzles built in so that should the printer be unused for a while and clog up I can replace the ink and nozzle. Occasionally the paper flicks a corner and gets a bit smeary but this should not deter you. You will need to give it plenty of desk space but it is an A3 printer so can you expect a small footprint?34

Very good for photos, not so good for film and slides
Having spent some time doing research on different makes and models, I purchased a G4050 based on it's specs. Unfortunately, my excitement was short lived as the first one wouldn't even switch on. So much for HP's quality control!! The replacement turns out to be very good for scanning photos. The dust and scratch removal is quite impressive. However, this scanner is very frustrating when it comes to negatives and slides. It doesn't seem able to crop them at all well and one has to adjust the scanned area of each slide manually. I know that this isn't a dedicated film/slide scanner but I expected better reliability on this front. HP provide software for both XP and Vista but one has to open the installation guide before reading that some functions are not available with Vista. It doesn't mention which ones!!35

THINK TWICE BEFORE YOU BUY THIS MACHINE
We are on our second printer, the first left severe smudges along the right hand margin. Even though it was brand new, HP would only support it back at base with a 14 day turn around. We opted for a return and replacement. The new one is just as bad, this one we did return to HP for servicing. We have to continually clean the transfer unit to remove residue from the cartridges and still have a large quantity of copies coming out with marks along the margin. This is particularly worse if you have something that needs printing up to the edges,you get a shadow print of each line. My advice - look around for another machine. It's a shame because I am usually an HP fan.40
The worst printer I've ever owned
It is literally like this machine is plotting to ruin my life and drive me insane. I think about one in every three prints it jams and it is the least intuitive and easy to access machine once it jams - you have to squash your fingers round the back to try to pull out scraps of paper, which all tear as you try to prise out your wrecked print out from the machine. I would steer well well clear....
